Whether your wood burning fireplace is masonry or pre-engineered metal, you should build several small fires to cure the fireplace before enjoying a roaring blaze. Do not burn soft woods such as pine as the resin in them can cause chimney fires. In today's well-insulated homes, it may be necessary to open a door or window to create enough draft to start a fire in your fireplace. Always make sure your damper is in the fully open position when starting a fire.
