FIRE SAFETY TIPS

• Have your furnace, chimneys, and flues inspected, cleaned, and, if necessary, repaired.
• Always place a screen in front of a fireplace.
• Avoid using extension cords and overcrowding outlets.
• Put smoke detectors near every bedroom.
• Plan two ways out of each room. Have a meeting place outside. Practice leaving in case of an emergency with fire drills.
• Call 9-1-1 from a neighbors home in the event of a fire.
• Store matches in a closed metal container, away from the reach of children and heat sources.
• Store gasoline and other flammable liquids in a proper container and in a well-ventilated area.
• Do your children know what to do if a fire should start? Now is the time to be sure that they do!!
• Smoking materials are the leading cause of fire-related deaths: about 40%-50%.
• Adults over the age of 65 and preschool children have the highest risk of dying in a house fire
• Cooking is the leading cause of house fires and civilian injuries.

  PUBLIC RELATIONS

  The Fort Washington Fire Co. gets involved with the citizens of the township to promote fire prevention and to give the public an idea of what services we provide them with. Our fire fighters visit the elementary schools in the township during fire prevention week. We also visit any organization in the township that may request us to introduce the children to fire fighters and to our equipment.

  FIRE PREVENTION EXPO

  Every year, in addition to visiting local schools and organizations, the Fort Washington Fire Company hosts an expo at the Upper Dublin High School. This expo is during Fire Prevention week. We invite fire apparatus from all around the county to display their equipment. This expo is intended to teach the public the importance of fire safety. Pictures of the 1998 expo are shown below.

  INSIDE

  The Upper Dublin High School gymnasium is filled with displays from many organizations. Such organizations include the Fort Washington Fire Company, the Montgomery County Fire Academy, Pennsylvania Forestry Service, Red Cross, and much, much more. Refreshments are also available inside the gymnasium.

  

  

  

  OUTSIDE

  The scene is spectacular as fire apparatus from across Montgomery county line Loch Ash Ave. Apparatus includes aerial trucks - some demonstrating rappelling techniques, engines, rescue units, ambulances, and antiaue apparatus. Many demonstrations, such as vehicle rescues, oven fires, and different fire suppression techniques are visible throughout the evening. Also, a fire hose and target are set up for the children. One of the highlights of the evening is the landing of a helicopter.
